Meet our team

Sam Byford-Winter
Founder, senior instructor & inclusion officer

Sam has been training in martial arts and combat sports for over 20 years. He manages Nam Yang Brighton and Hove branches and runs all the kickboxing programs, teens kung fu, junior programs and little tigers as well as our community outreach work.  If that wasn't enough, he's also our competition team head coach.

Tom Stiff
Founder, senior instructor

Tom is Nam Yang Brighton's longest serving instructor and has been training with Nam Yang for over 20 years. He currently runs the Tiger-Crane Kung FuShuang Yang and Chi Gong adult classes. Being a direct disciple of Grandmaster Tan Soh Tin, his classes are famous for their high intensity warm ups and his attention to detail of technique and form.

Amelie Byford-Winter
Volunteer Instructor

Amelie Byford-Winter has been training with Nam Yang Brighton since the age of four. She has competed six times, including representing Great Britain at the World Savate Championships in Slovenia, where she won a silver medal. Years of training have given Amelie powerful technique—her kicks often rival those of our adults! As part of our assistant instructor team, she brings a positive, encouraging energy that younger students really connect with.

Andy Willis
Instructor

Andy Willis began his martial arts journey with Nam Yang Epsom in 2000 before joining Nam Yang Brighton as our boxing coach. He holds Level 1 and 2 coaching qualifications with the British Boxing Board and brings a wealth of experience from training in Thailand, China, Singapore, and at the renowned Fitzroy Lodge in London. Andy has competed nationally and internationally in San Da and is part of our competition coaching team. 

Caelan Smith-Kehoe
Assistant/ Lead Instructor

Caelan Smith-Kehoe found Nam Yang Brighton at the age of 14 and has been dedicated to martial arts and combat sports ever since. A semi-professional Muay Thai fighter, he has competed nationally and internationally, including professional bouts in Thailand. Caelan holds national titles in Savate and San Da, as well as a CKA World Title in K1. He is part of our competition coaching team and can be found training most days at one of our gyms, driven by a genuine passion for the sport.

Christina Saunders
Instructor

Christina has trained in martial arts since she was a junior. She has experience training in and competing in Karate, Boxing, Muay Thai, Sanda Kickboxing, K1 and Savate Kickboxing - she is also a level 3 Personal Trainer with a passion for S&C for combat sports. Christina has national titles in both Savate and Sanda and has participated in pro amateur Muay Thai at the CKA World Championships she has also competed internationally in country’s such as France, Ireland and Italy and trained in Thailand. Christina also runs a separate club called Team Queen that offers martial arts training for women and people of marginalised genders.

Jack Davies
Instructor

Jack Davies has been training with Nam Yang Brighton since 2017, following experience in a range of martial arts and combat sports. He is a multiple-time national Savate champion and has represented Great Britain at both the European and World Championships. Jack is also a Level 3 qualified Personal Trainer and holds a blue belt in Brazilian Jiu Jitsu. Jack brings an amazing abundance of energy to all his lessons. 

 

Jasmin Morris
Instructor

Jas Morris is a skilled kickboxer who trains and teaches with both Nam Yang Brighton and Team Queen. She runs our female teens kickboxing class, creating a welcoming and empowering space for young women to build confidence and skill. Jas has also competed in kickboxing and brings her experience and energy into every session.

Jim Turner
Instructor

Jim Turner—known in the club as Big Jim—has been with Nam Yang Brighton since 2002 and is one of our longest-serving members. He teaches Kung Fu, Shuang Yang, and Chi Gong, and is the lead instructor for our evening Chi Gong sessions in Hove. Jim’s day job as a secondary school teacher in the Technology department shapes his calm, clear, and detail-oriented teaching style.

Josh Keys
Instructor / Assistant Instructor

Josh Keys has been with Nam Yang for over 15 years, training at both our Brighton and Epsom branches. He teaches across our Tiger-Crane Kung Fu, Shuang Yang, and Chi Gong classes, and is also trained in Chinese Lion Dance, performing regularly at local events and celebrations. 

Sam Pottier
Instructor / Assistant Instructor

Sam Pottier is another long serving member of Nam Yang Brighton. Having been with the club since the early 00’s. Sam teaches in our Kung Fu classes, as well as Chi Gong and Shuang Yang classes. He also trains in our K1 and Savate kickboxing classes and has competed numerous times.
